Interview with Julia Birke

Crispy Citron: If you were to describe yourself to a stranger what would you tell them? (hobbies/interests/passions)

Julia: I’m an obnoxious optimist who spend my time living my life to the fullest. Family means everything to me - there is nothing I wouldn’t do for them. What I value most is creating memories with loved ones, trying new things and traveling. Fashion is my guilty pleasure.

Crispy Citron: What was your catalyst moment that sparked your interest in becoming a model?

Julia: My first shoot. I was only 12 years old and it was a test shoot for my book. Doing something for the first time is always special, I will never forget that exciting feeling. That feeling of excitement is also what motivates me and the reason why I love my work. Everyday is different  - new location, new interesting people and new creative ideas put together and everyone involved contributes to the final result.

Crispy Citron: What was your big break? The moment where you said “Wow - I can’t believe I’m doing this?

Julia: I don’t know if I see any particular moment as my big break. However there have been many different milestones over time that together makes me stunned. One of those would definitely be my first magazine cover. I went to a newsstand first thing in the morning on the release date. My reaction was precisely “Wow - I can’t believe thats me!”

Crispy Citron: What drew you to One Management?

Julia: A photographer once told me “When the agent screams and jumps of excitement when you walk in the door, you have found the right agency” This doesn’t happen a lot, hardly ever I believe. But I have always kept it in mind. On my meeting with One Management I was so nervous. At the time the step seemed too high, and I felt too unexperienced. As I arrived we sat down, took some polaroids and did an introduction video. There was no jumping or screaming. But they really saw potential in me and made me believe in myself like no agency had before.

Crispy Citron: How do you think Instagram has changed the game for the modelling?

Julia: Social media and Instagram have definitely changed the industry in many ways. Magazines are suffering, everyone can keep up with theirs personal style and beauty Icons direct through their phone. Agencies has less power than ever and the traditional model “look” is no longer required. Exposure through social media gets you work.

Crispy Citron: What’s your go-to make up?

Julia: Charlotte Tilbury Instant Look In A Palette - the name says it all! One bronzer, rouge, highlighter and three eye shadows in one. Works wonders for all skin tones.

Crispy Citron: As a traveller of the world, which are you favorite spots to return to?

Julia: When traveling, I love to explore new places! At the same time, there are a few places that I love to return to. Gotland, an island outside of Sweden, where I have a lot of childhood memories. Also Burningman - going there fills me with inspiration for my work and on a personal level. There is no better place in the world for taking a break from our hectic lives and appreciating living in the now.

Crispy Citron: If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Julia: My F.R.S Pyjama Set.

Crispy Citron: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced working as a model? Have you always been supported in your interest in modelling?

Julia: The fashion industry can be rough to say the least and it affects most aspects of your life. Dealing with rejection and recognition at the same time can play tricks with your mind. Another challenge is striving to stay in shape and healthy at all times. A model is always working. However, I have always had my family's full support in whatever I choose to do, they believe in me and the choices I make. When they see how much I love it - they love it just as much for me.

Crispy Citron: Is there anything else you want to tell your followers?

Julia: Live your own values! Everyone have a different point of view and principles. If you always try to be your best self in all situations - no one has the right to judge you. It’s impossible to please everyone, so If they do, it’s their issue. Last and but not least: Surround yourself by people who cherish you for being You!
